First time Dungeon Master tips
What is a Combat Encounter?
Here is the first blog in our series of “First time Dungeon Master tips”. In Dungeons and Dragons adventures, combat encounters are a key aspect of playing the game and creating an engaging experience. As a DM, you’ll be responsible for designing many facets of your campaign to ensure your players have a great experience while playing, and combat encounters are a large part of that. But what exactly are combat encounters and how do you create an engaging experience for your players?

First time Dungeon Master tip #1
Take Action To Overcome a Challenge
A combat encounter in D&D is an encounter that facilitates action in the form of combat from your player characters. What kinds of actions and combat happen during your encounters depend on multiple factors IE: the players who are participating, their character’s classes, what levels these characters are at, the setting, and how many opponents your players are facing. First time Dungeon Master tip #2:
All About Balance
What makes a combat encounter more fun is when you balance the abilities of the players with the abilities of their opponents. This balance is necessary to ensure that your players don’t lose interest in an encounter that’s too easy or become frustrated or discouraged in an encounter that’s too difficult. There are two things to think about when working on an encounter, which are Challenge Rating and Action Economy.

First time Dungeon Master tip #3:
Challenge Rating
Challenge Rating, or CR, is how well a creature or opponent will match with a group of four player characters, represented by a numerical rating. This rating is applied in the Monster Manual to help Dungeon Masters determine the average levels a party should be at when facing a particular creature. For instance, a CR of 1 means that a party of four adventurers at level 1 should be able to handle said creature or enemy.

First time Dungeon Master tip #4:
Action Economy
The action economy is the measure of how many actions are taking place during combat. Each adventurer and each enemy will have at least one action per round, so if you have a large number of enemies opposing a small number of players, your economy will be less balanced and may potentially be more difficult.
